A Gut Feeling On Better Sexual Health

A Gut Feeling On Better Sexual Health

Our bodies are a complex array of interconnected and interdependent parts and pieces. That we can actually function with all of these moving, microscopic bits is pretty astonishing. It also explains how we can encounter significant issues in other areas when one of our essential parts is not acting as it should.

When people experience health concerns, there is often a cascading effect of concern. An ankle problem can lead to a knee problem can lead to a hip problem can lead to a back problem. And on and on and on. Our biological ecosystem is such an interwoven masterpiece that removing or damaging one piece of the jigsaw puzzle can affect the whole greatly.

And one of the worse situations is when you don’t know the connection between two issues. It is one thing to deal with a health concern, but when it takes a toll on other, seemingly unconnected bodily functions, the frustration levels can grow, adding stress to your problems.

This is sometimes the case with sexual dysfunction and problems. The root cause may not be at all related to sex. However, there are so many other parts of the body that affect our sexual function—and some in completely undetectable ways.

Getting to know your gut

Take, for example, the gut. So many people suffer from belly-related ailments, whether short-term or chronic. Diarrhea, constipation, indigestion, bloating, gas and acid reflux and many more are common situations for many people. Now, it is altogether possible that a lack of interest in sex while dealing with any of these situation is perfectly understandable. You don’t feel well, you don’t want to fuck.

However, our gut issues are much more complex than the manifestations of those discomforts—particularly for women. And this goes back to our big, interconnected interior ecosystem. A significant amount of needed hormones are produced in our guts and if this hormone supply is disrupted, there is an inevitable effect further down the line.

Sexy serotonin

The hormone in question is serotonin. Sure, we mostly know serotonin as a mood affecting hormone, but it does also affect sexual drive and desire. We’ve also usually thought that serotonin is produced in the brain. Turns out the vast majority of this essential hormone is actually produced by the wide array of necessary bacteria that lives in our guts. Long story short: healthy gut, healthy sex.

And how do we achieve a healthy gut? Well, by making a conscious effort to eat healthful foods, maintain an exercise routine and avoid chemical additives. Eat lots of vegetables, fruit and good fats. Go to the gym, jog, take walks. No more artificial sweetener. Wash any lingering pesticides off your foods (or just don’t buy food that has been exposed to pesticides). Avoid, limit or entirely cut out sweets from your diet.

This may not sound fun, but consider the upside: if you can improve your overall health, specifically your gut health, you could be having better sex! I mean, hell, I’m sold at that...but consider another benefit. Because there are so many interconnected systems, but all of the benefit from better diet and exercise will potential help with other systems that might also be affecting your sex. Really, starting with better gut health for better sex could have a great impact on your whole body.
