The Innovations of Condoms

The Innovations of Condoms

It is hard to believe that condoms have been more or less unchanged for almost one hundred years. Of course, barrier contraceptives have been around for centuries, but the current fabricated models that slide down tight over the penis have been pretty standard for a long time. And this could be why people still aren’t embracing condoms as much as our current sexual health situations dictate.

We are still at risk of sexually transmitted infections. Despite years of education (not all of it great, but hey), transmission of HIV/AIDS remains a significant issue around the world. And of course, other STIs continue to affect our sex lives - all of which are preventable by properly using condoms.

But the same complaints about condoms remain. Sensation is lost. They are a mood killer. They taste and smell bad when trying to use them with oral sex. It isn’t always easy to get the right fit. Some people are allergic to latex (and other materials are harder to find). They break.

Unless you are fluid-bonded with a partner, we should be using condoms at all times, despite these difficulties. Every time we have sex with someone, we are making health decisions for both of us. Gone are the truly hedonistic days where these thoughts could be ignored in the name of pleasure.

Fortunately, hope is on the horizon! Advances in condom technology are coming that will improve how much we will be cumming!

As a second generation fully enveloped in condom culture comes into their sexual maturity, those who were the first to grow up fully expecting to use condoms in all sexual play are dedicating research, time and money to finding new barrier contraceptives that will not only be more effective in preventing the spread of infection and deter potential pregnancies, but will also increase the pleasure of both partners.

In 2013, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation put out a public call for innovators to come up with new and exciting ways to make condoms better. Later that year, 11 projects were greenlit, with $100,000 in funding for each, to pursue research and advancement in hopes of finding a better condom. The project that is deemed the most successful will receive $1 million from the foundation.

This public-appeal approach is now starting to pay off. Some of the projects that got the go ahead are close to becoming reality. The innovators have been busy and focusing on a number of different aspects of condoms in their search for the pleasure grail. Some concentrate on the material, trying to find better feeling and stronger substances than latex. Others have been working on the form and shape of the condom to move away from the traditional “sheath.” How the condom is actually applied has also received some strong consideration.

It makes perfect sense that time and money is being devoted to this potentially life-changing research. Sex is definitely not going away, and we are learning and devoting more ways to bring increased pleasure into our sexual experiences. Making our sexy times safer will definitely make the world a better place.
