Q&A: What's The Best Type Of Lube?

Q: "My husband and I have been together for many years and we have great sex. But sometimes, no matter how horny I am, I just don’t get as wet as I used to. I’ve heard it is good to use lube. What is the best type of lube to buy?"

A: Lube really is the best sex product you’ll ever own. Unfortunately, there is a silly stigma around using lube. Some people think that if you can’t create your own wetness then you’re really not turned on. This is completely ridiculous. Women’s bodies have many different cycles and whether she produces her own lubrication can be impacted by her menstrual cycle, hormones, stress, general health or even simple dehydration. Because of these factors, she might be ready to tear her partner’s clothes off and still not be wet and ready. Finding your perfect lube is the best way to be wet and ready any time you want to be!

There are, essentially, two main types of lube on the market now: silicone lube and water-based lube. Sure, back in the day people used mineral oil, hand creams, petroleum jelly and Crisco, but with so many better, more durable and healthier options available, there’s no reason to raid your kitchen cupboard or medicine cabinet to improve your sex life.

Water-based lubes are extremely popular because they come the closest to resembling your bodies own juices. Many have little to no taste, so they won’t be a turn-off when engaging in oral sex. Water-based lubes are also great for those with sensitive skin and will cause less irritation. One important thing to remember is that these lubes tend to dry up and become sticky faster than silicone lubes. However, because they are water-based, you can just drizzle on a little water on yourself or your partner and the lube will become nice and slick again.

Silicone lubes are another fantastic option. This wonder material for sex products breaks down naturally in and on the body - and can actually leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. But we’re talking about sex and silicone lube is amazing for all kinds of sexual activity. Silicone lube actually last longer than water-based lubes and resists getting tacky and sticky. However, if you plan to play with silicone sex toys, do not use silicone lube with them. While this seems counterproductive, silicone lube actually breaks down silicone toys. So, if you have a favourite, you don’t want it damaged!

There is a lot to consider when you are picking a lube. Fortunately, many brands offer smaller, trial sizes for you to explore. Like most other things in life, you’re going to find a favourite and probably stick with it. Whether you prefer a thicker lube or a more liquidy one, it is best to try a number of them out before settling in with a larger purchase.

And let’s not forget: using lube to enhance your sexual experience is a fantastic thing! After you experiment and find your absolute favourite, chances are you’re going to want to use some even when you don’t necessarily need it. Bottom line: Lube feels great!
