The Major Medical Advancement of Penis Transplant

The Major Medical Advancement of Penis Transplant

When you ask people about potentially losing their sexual abilities, a look of fear creeps across their face. We place such a significant social significance on sex that not being able to fit into a world where sex is supreme could result in a life of ostracization and loneliness. There have already been medical advances to ensure everyone remains on a level playing field, most notably erectile dysfunction aids and medications.

Those advances only suppose one kind of sexual issue though. What happens when the person’s sexual organ itself has been irreparably injured or removed? How do patients react and cope with that situation?

Doctors are attempting to help just such a situation with penis transplants coming up this year in the United States. This isn’t an entirely new situation, two such transplants have been conducted before. One was a success, one was not. The new team attempting this groundbreaking surgery is looking at both of those past situations to learn from this time around.

Worthy first recipients

And they’ve picked a noble case as their first. The medical team is focusing on penis transplants for service members who have been injured during a tour of duty. These fellas have risked their life for their country and in a small way, the medical establishment is looking to give back to them for their service and the injuries they’ve sustained.

The surgery itself is delicate—in more ways than one. Any transplant requires a lot of time in surgery and in precision. The 12 hour procedure will be difficult on the patient and the doctors and nurses. It is precise and challenging.

But it is also important. In our society, a man without a penis is not really a man at all. Men whose penises do not function in the typical “get-it-up-and-stick-it-in” mentality are definitely going to be shunned. This is evident by how strong the response was to erectile dysfunction products. Imagine how keen men who have had penis injury will be if this surgery becomes commonplace!

From necessary to cosmetic?

At the same time, if this procedure does become one that surgeons can master, is there a potential that the techniques could become further evolved into cosmetic surgery? Could we be looking to a time when men will finally get that impossible dream of a bigger, thicker dick—just because they want it? How will society react to that potential?

It is hard to put this out there, but I hope there is never a movement toward designer dicks. That is hard to say because I think body autonomy, particularly in relation to sex, is a key personal decision. Sure, we’ve all seen the wild and wacky plastic surgeries that people have undergone, particularly breast implants. And hey, if you want to do that you should be allowed.

But the potential for monster cock is a bit frightening. No pun intended, but I don’t think guys can handle it. Somehow dudes still do not understand that it isn’t the size of the cock that matters—in straight or gay sex. It is being a good sex partner!

So, good on these service men who are going to reap the benefits of advances in sexual medicine, but let’s be wary about the future implications.
