Homophobia is loosely defined as the ‘fear’ of homosexuals. In reality, it isn’t that homophobes fear, it is that they hate homosexuals. That hate takes many forms including discriminatory laws and violence.

Homophobia was long institutionalized in law and medical practice. Queer folks were often locked up in mental institutions and have been denied many legal rights because of their sexuality. In recent times, countries have been moving away from homophobic laws and policies to embrace pensions for gay folks, adoption and marriage.
