A virgin is a person who has yet to have sex. Some cultures and religions adhere to a strict code of no sex until marriage and within most cultures losing one’s virginity is a significant life marker.

Virginity is a means of control by authority figures. It can be used to deem someone, usually women, pure or not. In groups where being a virgin until marriage is mandatory, having sex before being matrimonially bound can result in severe punishment.
