Why Are Millennials Abstaining From Sex?

Why Are Millennials Abstaining From Sex?

Oh those millennials!

It seems you can’t go anywhere or read anything that doesn’t involve the plight or scourge (depending how you look at it) of those people born in the mid 1990s who are coming of age in the big bad world.

Missing out?

The thing is, they aren’t coming. Not in the colloquial, sexytime slang sense. While we bemoan how these latest adults have no jobs, no futures and no money, apparently we’re also starting to realize that they also don’t really have any sex. Yup, millennials don’t seem to be having sex—but this one is of their own choosing.

And this is contrary to what we used to think of millennials and their bedtime habits. A few years ago, the term “hook-up culture” was all the rage and moralists were in a tizzy trying to figure out how to stop the rampant use of apps like Tinder and Grindr that make picking up so damn easy and convenient. It was also widely reported that university and college campuses were basically one big, non-stop orgy with a few classes attended just to ensure the money keeps coming from parents.

Well, it seems that neither is really true. Sure, their are people swiping and fucking and going to school and fucking, but this is not the norm for millennials. In fact, 15% of respondents to a recent survey indicated they do not have sex lives, which is double the generation that come of age in the 1960s. Really, millennials are about on pace with the folks of the 1920s.

What has changed for millennials?

So, why are millennials eschewing erotic enjoyment? Why aren’t they having sex? Are they too busy growing beards, scouting craft beer and shopping for vintage styles? Okay, that might be a little harsh, but the reasons are not really known. Could there be a malaise set in due to the lack of prospects that were mentioned earlier? Could it be as simple as the fact that many live at home with their parents longer and they don’t want to be boning with their parents around? Hell, if that’s the reason, it is a damn good one.

Here’s my own take on it. In many parts of the world, there seems to be a renewed focus on conservatism, or, just a general rebellion against the liberal philosophies that have been strong in many different nations in the past decade. At crossroad times like this, people will often fall into a conservative or liberal mindset and when there is a potential global shift, folks often go the opposite way from the previous ideology. Places like the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom are potentially shifting conservative in a big way and this could definitely have a direct image on sex.

On the other hand, if it isn’t politics swaying people, it could be sex culture itself. We’ve made tremendous sexual advances the last two decades, and if the above reasoning can be applied, it could be that millennials are shifting to a more conservative sexual mindset. This isn’t to say they are negative...they just aren’t as interested in exploring as the previous generation.

Where does this leave millennials? Where they probably have bigger things to worry about than sex...but really...what better cheap way to have fun could there be?
