Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that causes outbreaks of painful blisters in and around the genitals. There are two types of herpes viruses and it can be spread through the liquid inside the blisters or released through the skin. Sex is a prime way to get herpes.

Many people do not even know they have herpes and spread it unknowingly. Sometimes it manifests in blisters, sometimes it doesn’t. It is believed that up to 1 in 6 people carry one of the herpes viruses. Using contraceptives such as condoms during sex is a good way to prevent the transfer of the herpes virus but even that isn't guaranteed.
