Delicious And Disabled

Delicious And Disabled

Let’s pretend you like to look at sexy photos. I know, I know, that might be a stretch, I mean, who in the world would possibly want to look at beautiful people dressed in skimpy outfits? Okay, so, probably ALL of us want to look at hot folks in next to nothing!

But now, think about the types of sexy images you do look at. Who do you see posing? What are their bodies like? Of course, we all have types and preferences and we gravitate toward those images in particular (did someone say something about redheads? What? Who?). But take a deeper think on those people you see. Those people are put on film for the sake of promoting desire.

Lack of diversity

Chances are you’re looking at people who are able-bodied. The vast majority of sexual photos and images do not include representation of people with disabilities. Beyond specific, fetishized images, folks who have different body shapes and folks who use assistive devices are rarely considered for sexual imagery. But that just might change with projects such as Enhance the UK, and their stunning photography collection #UndessingDisability which showcases many hot models who do live with disability.

Take a look through the images and I dare you not to fall in love with a great many of these people. Beautifully shot and featuring some delightfully delicious lingerie, the collection features many different models of diverse bodies. The goal of the photos is to bring awareness to misconceptions about the sexual needs and desires of people with disabilities but also the lack of education folks receive about sex and relationships. It is shocking to learn that disabled children and young people are four times as likely to be abused and neglected and that disabled women are twice as likely to encounter domestic and sexual violence from their partners.

Encapsulating these messages within a context that includes very sexual imagery reinforces the power disabled folk can take back. All too often they are perceived as without sexual desire or need—when, in fact, nothing could be further from the truth! Just because somebody has a disability, whether seen or unseen, does not mean they should be shunted off to the corner and be thought of as undesirable and undesiring. Just as many disabled folk are down to have sex as able-bodied folk are. Let’s take this silly idea out of our minds.

Feeling sexy feels good

And in Enhance the UK’s photos, you can see the empowerment that comes with being desired. The models exude both confidence and vulnerability. When you’ve been pegged as undesirable, you probably aren’t as inclined to show your body to the world. It is only natural to want to shy away from the spotlight. But moving out of the shadows can not only give you a boost of confidence, it can inspire others. And these sexy people have taken the plunge to do so, and hopefully others will also feel empowered by their message.
